Summer Projects

We have had a busy summer at DAP. Having completed “The Music Man” designed by Robert Jones, we then worked on elements of Dr Atomic, for English National Opera, designed by Julian Crouch. This opens at the Metropolitan Opera in October. We also created additional floor cloths sections for Hansel and Gretel and a small floorcloth for Love and Other Demons, both for Glyndebourne.

We are now painting Calendar Girls For Robert Jones that will open in Chichester in September, before a national tour, and we are about to start a mural for “Rain Man” designed by Jonathan Fensom.

A New Paint Frame

We have added a paint frame to the back wall of the studio. It is suitable for mural and studio theatre projects and allows us to paint cloths up to 10m x 4m. We can of course still paint much larger cloths on the floor, but the frame will increase the capacity of the studio and should prove a very useful new facility.

Recent work has included two shows for Shakespeares Globe Theatre. King Lear was designed by Jonathan Fensom, and A Midsummers Night's Dream,by Mike Britain. At the moment we are working on scenery for The Music Man designed by Rob Jones. This will be followed by cloths and scenery for Milkshake, a touring children's show.

Spring 08

After completing work for the Royal court and the Almeida we shifted scale slightly and undertook a series of floorcloths for Glyndebourne . This was for a production of Hansel and Gretel. The design was of a forest floor with thick mossy areas. Pictures of the cloths will be added to the site once the production opens later in the year. We also undertook a small mural project and have just finished a cloth for a children's theatre show produced by the BBC.

Facilities in the studio continue to improve. we now have an airline system powered by a hydrovane compressor. This makes for a much quieter working environment and gives use greater control when spraying.

Happy New Year

The end of last year and the start of 2008 have been a busy time. We worked with Fitch, an international design company, on a prototype for a new marketing idea for one of their major clients. We painted a new floor for "Macbeth" designed by Anthony Ward, which is moving from the West End to Broadway. Over the christmas period we painted a large floor for " Lucia De Lammermoor" for English National Opera, designed by Charles Edwards. The extra studio space came into it's own with this job!

The new year gets off to a good start with work for the Royal Court Theatre. The Vertical Hour, a new play by David Hare is designed by Mike Britton. This will be followed by a cloth for "Rupert the Bear" a children's show produced by Children's Showtime and then "The Homecoming" at the Almeida Theatre designed by Jonathan Fensom.

We are looking at a number of other projects for the late winter and spring.

A larger studio and other changes

A number of changes have been under way through the autumn. The first to mention is our change of name. Decorative Art Projects was a bit long winded and so we have decided to employ the website address and become DAP Studio. To go with our name we have a new set of business graphics. Many thanks to Michael at Blue Rabbit Creative for his work on our new look.

The website has been smartened up and a feedback page has been added where you can let us know how you've found working with us. As this is a recent addition it is sparsely populated at the moment!

Our layout area has expanded to 24m x 15m. (Cloths up to 27m wide can be laid out without a byte provided the drop is less than 12m.) This will enable us to tackle larger projects and has created a more flexible working environment.

We have just finished painting Cloud Nine designed by Peter Mackintosh for the Almeida Theatre. Next we'll be working on elements of Macbeth designed by Anthony Ward for it's broadway run. We are looking at a number of other projects for the remainder of this year and also for the new year.
